JAMMU, Feb 6: Former MLA and general secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Ashok Kumar along with Ankur Dogra, a Youth Congress leader and social activist has taken a significant step to address the long-standing issues faced by temporary lecturers and teaching assistants in government colleges across Jammu and Kashmir.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah both urged for immediate action on salary hikes, job security, and implementation of University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.
Speaking on the matter, Ashok Kumar emphasized that the demand for a salary hike is not merely about financial compensation but also about acknowledging the critical role contractual teachers play in shaping the future of J&K’s youth.
“The current salary of Rs 28,000 per month, excluding payments during summer and winter breaks, is a gross injustice, especially in the face of rising living costs due to perpetual inflation. A salary increment is essential to ensure a dignified livelihood for these educators,” he stated.
The memorandum also highlighted the need for a comprehensive policy to rehabilitate and secure the jobs of temporary lecturers. Kumar called for the implementation of UGC guidelines, recommending that temporary lecturers receive the basic salary equivalent to that of Assistant Professors.
“The Government must fulfill its promises and recognize the invaluable contributions of temporary lecturers to society. It is high time they are afforded the same dignity, respect, and financial security as their peers across India,” Kumar added.
The former MLA urged the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to act swiftly to resolve these pressing issues, noting that providing fair compensation and job stability is essential to fostering quality education and ensuring the welfare of educators in the region.
