His dedication and passion for the craft of theatre have made him a linchpin in the renowned Natrang Repertory Company, where he has carved a niche for himself over three decades.
Neeraj Kant’s association with Natrang began 38 years ago, and since then, he has been an integral part of its evolution. Joining as an Assistant Director and later becoming the Chief of Natrang Repertory Company in 1990, Kant has dedicated his career to nurturing and enhancing the theatre scene in Jammu and Kashmir. His extensive involvement in the company speaks volumes about his commitment and expertise.
His early work included assisting the celebrated Padmashree Balwant Thakur on notable plays such as *Bawa Jitto*, *Mahabhoj*, *Ghumayee*, *Aap Hamare Hain Kaun*, *Hum Hai Na*, *Gulab Gaatha*, *Mata Ki Kahani* and many more. These experiences were instrumental in shaping his approach to theatre, providing him with a solid foundation and a wealth of knowledge that he would later channel into his own directorial ventures.
His direction has not only enriched the repertoire of Natrang but has also contributed to the broader theatre community by experimenting with different narratives and styles. Some of his acclaimed short plays include Sab Chakkar Hai, Jan-Shikshak, Gandhi – Ek Vichaar Dhara, Sahara, Padhe-Likhe Anpad, Bhrasht Tantra, Lamhon Ki Khatah, Papa Jab Bachhey They (Adaptation), Ghunghat (a short play based on the story of Ismat Chugtai), Mera Ghar Mera Sapna (based on the story of bonded labourers), and Yahan Kutta Kaun Hai.
These short plays demonstrate Kant’s remarkable ability to distill complex themes into succinct yet deeply engaging performances. Some of his prominent roles include those in *Bawa Jitto*, *Mahabhoj*, *Ghumayee*, *Bagia Banchha Ram Ki*, *Kanjoos*, *Sainyan Bhaye Kotwal*, *Fandi*, *Raktbeej*, *Holi*, *Comedy of Terrors*, *Kabira Khada Bazar Mein*, *Kasai Badha*, *Shayad Kal Na Ho*, *Monkey’s Paw*, *Poster*, *Chauraha*, *Marnoprant*, *Gulab Gatha*, *Mata ki Kahani*, *Suno Eh Kahani*, *Chhoona Hai Aasman*, *Toba Tek Singh*, *Loktantra Ka Mantra*, *Sone Ki Chidiya* and many more.

His performances have reached audiences across cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bhilwara, Kota, Udaipur, Bhopal, Gulbarga, Bijapur, Dharwad, Belgaum, Goa, Trivandrum, Guwahati, Imphal, Lucknow, Shimla, Amritsar, Srinagar, Bhuvneshwar among others.
This extensive participation highlights Kant’s dedication to the theatre community and his role in representing regional theatre on a national and international platform. His involvement in these festivals has not only showcased his own work but has also contributed to the broader recognition of Natrang’s artistic endeavors.
In addition to his theatrical achievements, Neeraj Kant has made significant contributions to the academic and research fields. He received a Junior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, for his project titled “Search for a New Acting Methodology.” This recognition underscores his commitment to advancing the craft of acting through research and innovation.
Furthermore, Kant has served as a coordinator for the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s young theatre workers workshop at Mansar, Jammu. This role allowed him to mentor and guide emerging talents, further emphasizing his dedication to the growth and development of the theatre community.
Neeraj Kant’s impact extends to children and youth theatre, where he has conducted over 200 independent workshops for institutions such as the J&K Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages, North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala and various educational establishments. His workshops have played a crucial role in nurturing young talent and promoting an appreciation for theatre among the younger generation.
