Consumer forum imposes Rs.27.27 lakh penalty for charging Rs 27 more on 3 water bottles

KAKINADA, Mar 6: The Kakinada consumers forum on Thursday levied a penalty of Rs.27.27 lakh on a hotelier in Hyderabad for collecting Rs.27 more for three water bottles sold to a software engineer of Kovvada, a suburb of Kakinada city.
Even though the Hotel Tulips Grand is located in Hyderabad, the consumer forum has taken up the complaint as the consumer Kusuma Kalyan hails from the Kakinada district.
Consumers forum Chairman Raghupathi and Member Susi issued the order on Thursday levying a heavy penalty of Rs.27.27 lakhs on the hotelier for collecting Rs.87 instead of Rs.60 for three water bottles at the rate of Rs.20 each.
The Consumer Forum levied the fine as the Hotel management did not respond to the notices served by the Consumer Forum.
Of the total penalty, the forum ordered that Rs.25 lakhs should be remitted to the Telangana CM’s relief fund, Rs.25,000 to the complainant Kusuma Kalyan, and Rs.2,000 to the consumer court.
