JAMMU: Smt. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies (SSGCWS), MIER organized a programme under the series ‘Meet the Eminent Women Personality’ on Tuesday.
Dr. Chand Trehan, Registered Counsellor, RCI-Rehabilitation Council of India, was the resource person.
Dr. Renu Gupta, Chairperson MIER chaired the session. Dr. Adit Gupta, Principal and Director MIER, Rupa Gupta, Joint Director and Director CWS, HODs and Deputy HODs of PG and UG departments of the college along with the faculty and students attended the event.
Rupa Gupta welcomed and introduced the resource person. Dr. Chand Trehan is a Freelance Psychologist with over 20 years of experience in the field of counselling.
Dr. Trehan deliberated on the topic “Challenging Gender Inequalities: Role of Teachers, School & Society.
She stated that discrimination has a wide range of effects on women’s lives, from career advancement to mental health issues. Governments, schools, teachers and students all have a part to play in ensuring that schools are free of violence and discrimination and provide a gender-sensitive, good-quality education, she said.
She stressed that teachers should adhere to professional standards when it comes to disciplinary procedures and provide unbiased instruction. They must examine their own gender stereotyping to promote girls and boys equally in coeducational settings. Furthermore, they require knowledge about gender disparities in education as well as teaching strategies in order to help all students, regardless of gender, become more motivated.
Dr. Renu Gupta said that both boys and girls should feel safe and secure in the classroom.
She stated that women have already modified gender roles and eliminated certain deeply held false assumptions from the public’s thinking. Women have begun to work toward reaching goals and becoming self-sufficient in order to influence any situation in their favour.
Arpana Koul Assistant Professor, MIER College of Education presented a vote of thanks, and Sonali Sharma, student of M.Ed. expertly conducted the programme.
