STATE TIMES NEWS UDHAMPUR: With rapid climatic changes, increase in global temperature and population growth, there is a scarcity of potable water. The gradual fall of water level poses a serious problem in the country. So it is the need of the hour to look for the alternative methods to replenish the water bodies and one such method is Rain Water Harvesting during Monsoon. Since Ramnagar in district Udhampur gets maximum rainfall on an average in J&K so NSS Unit of Govt Degree College Ramnagar organizes a campaign “Catch the Rain” initiated by National Water Mission under the patron ship of Dr Udhey Bhanu, Principal GDC Ramnagar and guidance of Prof Ritika Mahajan, NSS Programme Officer. The objective of the campaign is to conserve rain water and ensure minimum wastage. Activities like drives to make water harvesting pits, roof top rain harvesting structures, repair of step wells etc were done during the campaign. NSS volunteers of the college namely Santosh Kumari, Sarishta Devi and Pritam headed the campaign. They constructed the structures in their villages and posted the photos and also motivated the other people to construct such structure and harvest rain water for the irrigation use and for animals. The campaign coordinator Prof Ritika Mahajan, NSS PO of the college opined that rain water harvesting is one of the effective way for water security and can be the permanent solution to the problem of water crises in J&K. Dr Udhey Bhanu, Principal of the college congratulated the team and also motivated them to conduct such activities in future too.
