Juvenile Justice Board inspects Police Stations, directs for creating child-friendly room

JAMMU: A team of Juvenile Justice Board Jammu comprising Principal Magistrate Jyoti Bhagat along with members namely Dr Cheshta Sharma and Nischint Pachnanda inspected Police Stations Trikuta Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Channi Himmat and Police Post Greater Kailash to check any violation. During inspection, no juvenile in conflict with law was found in Police custody however, no juvenile/ child-friendly room was found in any of the Police Stations, wherein children in conflict with law could be kept for a short-period of time.
Speaking during the inspection, Principal Magistrate Jyoti Bhagat sadi that Police often being first authority to a child in conflict with law, has a crucial role in implementation of child-friendly approach and an initiative has taken to make police sensitive to the needs of children.
They asked police authorities to create a separate child-friendly corner for the children in conflict with law in their respective police stations till they have their juvenile rooms in their police stations in terms of Rule 8 (3) (v) of JJ Act Rules 2016 which provides friendly premises for children so that an environment can be created where a child doesn’t face any fear while interacting with police. Further, the Board also appraised concerned SHOs as well as Incharge Police Post about role of Juvenile Police officers/ Child Police Officer during apprehension of CCL.
Police officials of inspected Police Station assured the inspecting team that they will dedicate one room, within the premises, with separate entrance for children, within a short span of time.
