Dr Vikas of SKUAST-J delivers lecture on Cancer Research in International Conference

JAMMU: Dr. Vikas Sharma highlights the use of Desi Karela of Nud village of Samba district in the management of cancer while delivering a keynote address at 5th International Conference on “Advances in Agriculture, Environmental and Biosciences for Sustainable Development (05-07, August, 2021)” by virtual mode organized by Agro Environmental Development Society (AEDS), Central Agricultural University Imphal in collaboration with Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya Gwalior and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
Dr Vikas through presentation of his research findings regarding “Bitter gourd anticancer efficacy” on August 7, 2021 discussed that systematic bioassays along with standard drugs of cancer were performed to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic effect of fruit part of karela on seven human cancer cell lines from seven different tissues namely breast, lung, colon, prostate, ovary, melanoma and renal and significant results were displayed against all the seven human cancer cell lines.
Dr. Sharma informed that the high intake of vegetables decrease the risk of several cancers in humans and the long term consumption of diet rich in fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of chronic diseases especially cancer.
He recommended that bitter gourd can be explored for further development of anticancer drugs and stressed that people should encourage the consumption of bitter gourd in their daily meals so as to avoid the risk of cancer.
