RIGHTS OF SENIOR CITIZENS

European Federation of Older Persons (EURAG) intends to universally translate social concepts into practices that benefit the seniors. Respect and consideration for each other, Justice and equality, solidarity with weaker members of the community and striving for a measure of humility are at the core of its enterprise. In the vision of EURAG, the older persons not only have rights but also responsibilities to the community as a whole and generations to follow them. The responsibilities of elderly entail the marking of productive contributions to the society. This is appropriate to a longer active phase of life, one that involves paid work, as well as volunteer activities and informal care. A positive image of elderly is important because the way in which the community regards its older members partly determines the manner in which they are treated and the extent to which they are able to participate in society.
Just like other citizens, the elderly have responsibility of contributing in accordance with their capacities to the social security system and community service; of making themselves available for political and social functions; form organizations to promote their material and immaterial interests and to protect their own interests. As far as the family is concerned, has paramount first and social environmentalism, where the child starts to develop its basic attitudes. Robert Bierstedi defines family as the most important of any other social group which is with us always or we are with it. M F Nimkoff defines, “Family is more or less durable association of husband and wife with or without a child, or of a man or woman alone, with children”. Most commonly a family consists of an adult and his or her offspring is divided into two types as nuclear family and extended or joint family
The joint family type is diminishing in the modern era due to multiple and unavoidable reasons amongst the people. In the past people often lived together with their married and unmarried children and married and unmarried grandchildren under the same roof with caring and sharing. Guiding the family members is one of the major role played by the senior citizens. They are in a position to guide and advice on spiritual and morality by dint of their immense expertise becoming an asset for their lineage, in shape of lighthouse of guidance.
Majority of the Senior citizens engage themselves in counseling related activities in family. Security of the family also rests on seniors. Human brings also learn the habits, attitudes, values and beliefs through repeated interactions with social groups where they have been socialization and it continues from generation to generation. Senior citizens play crucial role in socialization process even if they are otherwise members of the family being role models for the family to whom they follow. Senior citizens are also trusted for fairness in solving the intra family disputes and conflicts thereby creating harmonious solutions within four walls of family by maintaining harmonious environments of love and affections, the path which needs to be adhered to by our succeeding generations.
