SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta on Saturday asked the divisional and district administrations in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure coverage of 5 lakh people who have completed the mandatory interregnum period and are due to receive the subsequent dose with second COVID vaccination jab within a week.
Chairing a meeting to review the public health response to COVID-19, the Chief Secretary emphasised on early culmination of COVID vaccination drives to ensure safety of local population once the economy is fully opened with resumption of all economic activities, reopening of schools, and large scale tourism activities.
Administrative Secretaries of Health & Medical Education, Revenue, General Administration, besides Divisional Commissioners Kashmir/ Jammu, Inspectors General of Police, Kashmir/ Jammu, all Deputy Commissioners, all District Superintendents of Police along with MD, National Health Mission, Director, Family Welfare, and other concerned officers participated in the meeting.
The Health and Medical Education Department was asked to ensure regular supply of vaccines to the districts, besides enhancing their testing facilities for early detection of COVID infections and emerging hotspots.
The Chief Secretary impressed upon the district administration, Srinagar to remain vigilant to any surge in cases and focus intensively on daily testing of vulnerable population in consonance to the trajectory of infections. “Special focus is to be laid on early testing and isolation of symptomatic patients having influenza like infections (ILIs) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs) due to the sudden change in season” he added.
Dr. Mehta further underscored the need for strict enforcement of the COVID appropriate behaviour (CAB) and COVID SOPs and protocols, besides directing the enforcement agencies to strictly implement the established protocols and levy penalties on defaulters. He also directed continuation of the COVID dedicated IEC campaign to raise awareness regarding DOs and Don’ts for keeping the disease at bay.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 101 new positive cases of novel Corona virus during the past 24 hours — 11 from Jammu division and 90 from Kashmir division– thus taking the total number of positive cases in the Union Territory to 332154.

Moreover, 87 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and been discharged from various hospitals including 16 from Jammu Division and 71 from Kashmir Division.
On COVID vaccination, the officials said that 63,155 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered in the last 24 hours bringing the cumulative number of doses administered across J&K to 14,590,656.
According to the daily Media Bulletin, out of 332154 positive cases, 886 are Active Positive (103 in Jammu Division and 783 in Kashmir Division), 326836 have recovered and 4432 have died; 2176 in Jammu division and 2256 in Kashmir division.
The Bulletin further said that out of 16163431 test results available, 332154 samples have tested positive and 15831277 samples have been tested as negative till date. Besides, 39,002 COVID tests have been conducted in last 24 hours.
Till date 3825024 persons have been enlisted for observation which included 6267 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 886 in isolation and 448797 in home surveillance. Besides, 3364642 persons have completed their surveillance period.
Eleven fresh COVIDcases were detected in Ladakh, taking the overall virus tally in the union territory to 20,941 and the active cases to 58, officials said.
Ladakh has registered 208 Covid-related deaths 150 in Leh and 58 in Kargil since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.
The officials said 1,207 persons were tested for COVID-19 in the twin districts on Friday and 11 of them were found positive in Leh.
Two coronavirus infected patients were discharged from a hospital in Leh, thereby taking the number of recoveries in Ladakh to 20,675, they said, the number of active cases stands at 58 — 54 in Leh and four in Kargil.
The officials said no fresh covid-related death was reported in Ladakh on Friday.
