It seems that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will not get respite easily from the woes related to power shortage as, despite all possible measures in place by the administration, the situation in respect of electricity consumption and supply in J&K, is not satisfactory. For facilitating regular and quality power supply to the citizens of J&K, the administration has no doubt taken several out of the box initiatives and was hopeful that the issue of power pilferage would be resolved soon in coming days as the LG himself has promised for providing 24X7 quality power supply to people of J&K in a phased manner. But it seems that this target will not be easily achievable as this time the weather conditions are creating adverse situations. Due to the rapid increase in the maximum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir, the usage of air conditioners and other equipment started much earlier thereby putting a load on the UT for fulfilling the increased power demand. Moreover, due to low flow in the rivers and streams, the hydro-electric power stations are also not providing desirable results, in order to meet the increased demand of electricity. In such a scenario, the northern grid has expressed its inability to supply adequate electricity to J&K. Leaving aside other parts of the Union Territory, only Jammu region’s requirement of electricity per day is 1100 megawatts but against it, only 900 mega-watts are supplied to Jammu thereby causing a shortfall of 200 mega-watts. In this situation, the Union Territory will be left with only two options for meeting the increase demand of electricity, first to purchase the same from private sector which at present is not feasible for the administration due to high rate of Rs 15 per unit of electricity, and the other is to impose some curtailments to accommodate the available supply for fulfilling increase demand. Moreover as the MeT has predicted a dry and warm spell in coming days, it seems that grievances in respect of electricity will not end soon and may increase further in the days to come thereby defeating the attempts of the Government to provide uninterrupted power supply.
