Gigantic garbage heaps at Colonel Colony’s entrance mock at Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

STATE TIMES NEWS

JAMMU: The open space at entrance of Talab Tillo’s Colonel Colony gives a shabby look these days, as gigantic garbage heaps accord welcome to anyone and everyone who enters the colony giving two hoots to Government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This filth-ridden open space has been irking the residents of the aforesaid colony because on one side it gives a pathetic look to whosoever enters the colony and on the other is a probable source of diseases including Malaria, Dengue, Diarrhea, etc. Looking into seriousness of issue, people living in the vicinity have asked the authorities for shifting of the dumping point several times but still no action has been initiated yet.
Jatin Sethi, a social activist and a resident of Colonel Colony, said that the matter of shifting this filthy garbage point has been taken up with Corporator of Ward-41 and the Health and Sanitation Officer of Jammu Municipal Corporation but nothing has been done in this regard.
Sethi questioned that when the garbage is being collected on door to door basis then why the sanitation workers are being allowed to dump garbage at the entry point of the locality, which gives a shabby look to entire colony. On one hand, the Government is promoting Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and on the other hand such things reveal seriousness of the officers sitting at the helm of affairs.
JMC should immediately take serious note of such grave issue by shifting this dumping point somewhere else without any further delay.
Ajay Kumar, another resident, expressed anguish claiming that despite the fact that every year people fall prey to diseases like dengue, malaria, etc due to filth and heaps of garbage but Government is showing no interest in curbing such malpractices due to which innocent people have to face hardships.
Councilor of the Ward-41, Sanjay Baru said that he has taken up the issue with the concerned authorities.
He said that due to open space the people are using this place as a dumping ground and creating problems for other residents. He proposed imposing heavy fine on defaulters as the most of them are habitual offenders and will not shun this habit until the Government will not impose a befitting penalty.
