SRINAGAR/JAMMU, Jan 22: While minimum temperature plummeted in Kashmir today with Srinagar recording minus 5.3 degree Celsius, the winter capital Jammu remained colder than Srinagar again during the day today, whereas, five flights and two trains were cancelled and nine delayed, due to fog and poor visibility in Jammu.
A MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.3°C temperature against minus 4.8°C the previous night and it was 3.0°C below normal for the city for this time of the year.
Jammu recorded a day temperature of 9.6 degrees C which is 2 degrees less than that of Srinagar. The summer capital (Sgr) recorded a day temperature of 11.6 degrees C on Monday, as compared to 13.0 degree C on Sunday.
The winter capital- Jammu also remained colder during the day than Katra, Batote, Banihal and Bhaderwah towns, which recorded maximum temperatures of 15.5, 14.5, 16.6 and 14.4 degrees Celsius, respectively on Monday.
However, the minimum temperature at Banihal remained -1.0 degrees, Bhaderwah town 0.2 deg C and Katra Mata Vaishnodevi 3.0 degrees C today.
Leh City recorded a minimum temperature of -11.5 degrees and a maximum 2.8 degrees C today.
Qazigund in Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 5.2°C against minus 5.0°C the previous night, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.9°C against minus 6.5°C the previous night, Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 2.6°C against minus 2.3°C on Sunday, Kupwara town in north Kashmir a low of minus 6.0°C against minus 5.7°C the previous night while Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.0°C against minus 5.0°C the previous night.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 10.2 degree Celsius which is 5.7 degree Celsius above normal, Kupwara a maximum of 13.1 degree Celsius, Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 6.8 degree Celsius which is 6.4 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
The MeT official said that weather is likely to be dry till January 24. From January 25-26, he said, generally cloudy weather with light snow is expected at isolated higher reaches.
From January 27-28, he said, generally cloudy weather with light rain/snow over scattered places is likely. From January 29-31, he said, light to moderate rain/snow is “very likely” at many places across J&K.
He further said there is possibility of light rain/snow at scattered places on February 1.
Kashmir valley is under ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter, which will end on January 29. However, it does not mean an end to the winter. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
Meanwhile, an Airport official at Jammu said that five flights were cancelled and six others delayed due to poor visibility and fog in the northern region and the parts of Jammu today. He said three IndiGo (Del-Jmu-Sgr, Bom-Jmu-Sgr, Sgr-Jmu-Bom) and two Air India (Del-Jmu-Sgr, Sgr-Jmu-Del) flights were cancelled at Jammu Airport today.
He further disclosed that six flights including, three SpiceJet, two IndiGo and one Air India were delayed by several hours from their actual schedule during morning hours at Jammu on Monday due to foggy weather conditions.
A Northern Railways spokesman said that two trains (Himsagar Exp and Yognagri Exp) were cancelled at Jammu station while nine other trains were delayed due to fog in the region. He said Jhelum Express was delayed by 7 hours, Malwa Express by 6 hours, Puja Express arrived late by 4 hours, Shalimar Express by three hours, Uttar Samparak Kranti two hours while Superfast, Hemkund, Bhavnagar Exp and Tata Muri Exp arrived about one hour late at Jammu station on Monday.
