JAMMU, Nov 20: In a move to enhance security, Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered two FIRs against landlords for not following the District Magistrate’s (DM) order on tenant verification.
As per an official spokesperson, the FIRs, numbered 182/2024 and 184/2024, were lodged at Police Station Nawabad under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
He said that this action was part of a renewed effort by the police to ensure that all tenants and domestic workers are verified, aiming to reduce security risks posed by unverified individuals.
Pertinently, the DM’s order requires property owners to inform the local police about anyone renting their property.
The spokesperson confirmed that the verification was initiated by the SSP Jammu, led by the SP North Jammu and DySP Headquarters Jammu. The drive specifically targeted unverified tenants and domestic workers in the area.
“Two cases were registered under the BNSS during the verification drive,” the spokesperson said.
According to him, the District Magistrate’s order mandates property owners to provide tenant details to local police stations for proper verification.
“Failure to do so has led to the registration of these FIRs,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have urged citizens to provide tenant details to nearby police stations to ensure timely verification.
SSP Jammu has also emphasized that tenant verification is not just a legal obligation but also a civic duty to maintain community safety.
As the verification process continues, Jammu and Kashmir Police have called on property owners to comply with the regulations to help maintain a secure environment for all.
