Accused dies during treatment

JAMMU, Feb 11: An individual, who was arrested by the police recently in connection with a theft case, died at Government Medical College Jammu here after complaining of chest pain in the custody.

Suresh Anuragi, along with two other individuals, was arrested on February 4 and booked in case FIR number 344/2024 under the relevant sections of the law registered at Police Station Bahu Fort for allegedly stealing household items, including a fridge, LED, and gas cylinder, a police official said.
He said during his police remand at PS Bahu Fort, he was regularly examined by medical personnel, with check-ups conducted five times as per the standard operating procedures (SOP).
Today, while in police lockup, the police official said Anuragi complained of severe chest and abdominal pain.
Acting promptly, he said, the police shifted him to the District Police Hospital, and his family was notified.
Later, he was referred to GMC Jammu at around 4 Pm for further treatment, said the police official.
Unfortunately, Anuragi collapsed around 9:30 pm during the treatment, he added.
According to the police official, the deceased’s family was present with him at the hospital during his treatment.
He further said that Anuragi had a history of drug addiction and had previously undergone treatment at a de-addiction center.
A magistrate inquiry has been requested by the DPO Jammu, and an intimation in this context has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in accordance with the law, he said.
A post-mortem examination has also been ordered by a medical board, added the police official.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police have assured that a fair investigation will be carried out in the matter.
