Sainik Colony residents pay tribute to Shaurya Chakra awardee

JAMMU, Sept 28: Sainik Colony residents today paid rich tribute to Subedar Major Nain Singh, Shaurya Chakra (posthumous), at a solemn ceremony held in the park named after him.
Over 300 people gathered to remember the soldier’s courage and supreme sacrifice.
Sub Maj Nain Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his bravery during an encounter with terrorists in Panjnar village on September 27, 2000.
He had led from the front, evacuating an injured colleague under heavy fire despite being grievously injured himself.
Displaying rare courage, he lobbed a grenade and charged at the terrorists, killing two before succumbing to his injuries.
He was conferred the gallantry award posthumously by the President of India on August 15, 2001.
Residents recalled his fearless action and said such brave hearts keep the spirit of the nation alive.
The Commanding Officer of 4 JAK LI, along with personnel of the unit, also attended the event and paid floral tribute to the martyr.
The programme was organized by the Sainik Colony Management Committee.
Speakers at the event said the park and the annual tribute serve as a reminder of the sacrifice made by Sub Maj Nain Singh for the nation.
