Objective to create awareness: Suresh Sharma

JAMMU, Sept 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), in collaboration with SPIC MACAY Jammu and Kashmir, today organized a grand classical music concert at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu.
The evening featured an enthralling performance by Internationally acclaimed artist Padma Bhushan Pandit Sajan Mishra, one of the most celebrated exponents of Hindustani classical vocal music. The event drew an august gathering of dignitaries, artists, writers, scholars, and music lovers from across the Jammu region.
The program commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Pandit Sajan Mishra and Swaransh Mishra, joined by Sonali Arun Gupta, Additional Secretary, JKAACL; Dr Javaid Rahi, Divisional head, JKAACL, Jammu; and Suresh Sharma, Chairperson, SPIC MACAY, Jammu Chapter.
Welcoming the gathering, Suresh Sharma highlighted the vision behind hosting the concert, emphasizing that the primary objective of SPIC MACAY is to create awareness about Indian classical traditions among youth and the community at large. He said that several more performances are lined up in collaboration with JKAACL to strengthen the cultural fabric of the region.
In her address, Sonali Arun Gupta stated that the Academy has been consistently working to promote classical music-both vocal and instrumental-by providing a platform where nationally renowned artists and local talent can interact and carry forward the age-old traditions of Indian music. She added that such initiatives enrich the cultural landscape of Jammu and inspire younger generations to appreciate and practice classical art forms.
Pandit Sajan Mishra, addressing the audience, expressed his happiness at performing in Jammu after nearly two decades, recalling his earlier association with the Abhinav Theatre. He reflected on the role of classical music within the Indian knowledge system and its ability to uplift and connect individuals to their cultural roots. During his performance, he rendered evocative Ragas along with soulful Bhajans of Saints Tulsidas and Kabir, leaving the audience deeply moved.
The maestro was accompanied on stage by his son Swaransh Mishra, who provided vocal support, while Harnam Singh accompanied on Tabla and Harvinder Singh on harmonium, together creating a mesmerizing musical atmosphere.
On this occasion, JKAACL felicitated the visiting artist Padma Bhushan Pandit Sajan Mishra with a traditional shawl and a Basohli painting as a token of respect and admiration for his contribution to Indian classical music. The proceedings of the program were conducted by Anandita Dutt.
