JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday trapped and arrested Head Constable Mahroof Ahmed, posted at Police Station Mahore, District Reasi, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000.
According to an ACB spokesperson, a complaint was received alleging that the accused Head Constable had demanded illegal gratification from a person who had been granted interim bail by the Court on September 25, 2025, with the condition to report daily at PS Mahore between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
The complainant alleged that during the reporting period, the Head Constable harassed him, detained him beyond the prescribed hours, and demanded Rs 8,000 for permitting his timely release. The bribe amount was reportedly paid inside the police station on October 1, 2025.
Two days later, the accused allegedly demanded an additional ?12,000 for releasing the complainant’s tractor and allowing his release during prescribed timings, threatening to book him under the Public Safety Act (PSA) if he failed to comply. The demand was eventually negotiated to Rs 8,000.
Unwilling to pay further, the complainant approached the ACB, which verified the allegations and registered FIR No. 02/2025 U/S 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) at ACB Udhampur.
A trap team, led by a Gazetted Officer and in the presence of independent witnesses, caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 8,000.
The accused was immediately taken into custody. Further investigation into the case is underway.
