SILIGURI, Oct 7 : Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said today that his visit to the rain-battered districts of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri was ordered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assess the ground situation, interact with affected people, and submit a first-hand report to the PMO.
“I will meet the survivors of the dead and assess their losses caused by rains, landslides, and floods in the hills of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. I will also visit several affected areas and compile a report to submit to the Prime Minister,” Rijiju told reporters at Bagdogra airport.
Addressing the recent attacks on BJP MP from Malda Uttar, Khagen Murmu, and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri yesterday, Rijiju condemned the brutality and said that the Lok Sabha has already sent a notice to the West Bengal government seeking a quick reply.
He warned that if the reply is delayed, a privilege motion would be moved and appropriate action taken.
“The question here is that not only an MP and MLA, but every citizen in India has the right to live freely under the Constitution,” Rijiju said.
“But if someone indulges in ‘dada giri’ and runs a ‘gunda raj’ by assaulting people, it is not acceptable,” the union minister added.
