J&K Police Intensify Security Drive Across Kashmir To Curb SIM Card Misuse

Srinagar, Oct 8: J&K Police today intensified their security drive across Kashmir to curb the misuse of SIM cards.
Separately, Police in Budgam attached the property of a terror handler operating from Pakistan.
In a series of coordinated operations to crack down on SIM card misuse, police conducted simultaneous raids, inspections, and verification drives in Anantnag, Kulgam, Sopore and Baramulla districts.
In Anantnag, police teams carried out special inspections of SIM card vendors to ensure strict adherence of the Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and to prevent unauthorized SIM activations.
Police said officers interacted with vendors, emphasizing their crucial role in safeguarding communication systems from being exploited for unlawful or terror-related purposes.
“Vendors were categorically instructed to comply with Department of Telecommunications (DoT) guidelines and maintain proper verification records to prevent the misuse of mobile communication channels,” police said.
Similarly, Police in Sopore conducted surprise inspections of SIM vendors. The drive focused on identifying violations related to fraudulent SIM issuance, cyber fraud, and impersonation.
Police officials sensitized vendors about their legal obligations and warned that any negligence could attract strict legal action.
In Baramulla, a comprehensive verification drive was carried out in Sub Division Uri. The operation covered all police stations and posts, including Uri, Boniyar, Bijhama, Kamalkote, and Uroosa.
Police said most vendors were found adhering to laid-down procedures, though they were reminded to strictly follow biometric verification and preserve customer records.
In Kulgam, Police teams carried out surprise checks at multiple locations to ensure strict compliance with KYC norms, proper verification of customer documents, and to curb unauthorized activation of SIM cards without valid credentials.
During the inspections, officers interacted with vendors and emphasized their crucial role in maintaining the integrity of communication networks.
Kashmir has in the past witnessed instances of SIM card misuse being exploited for unlawful and anti-national activities.
Meanwhile, Police in Budgam today attached the property of a terror handler operating from Pakistan. The property measuring three kanals and 19 marlas at Dasan, Beerwah was attached after obtaining prior approval from the competent authority.
Police said the property belonged to Fayaz Ahmad alias Gadda, who had exfiltrated to Pakistan and was found to be utilizing the said property for the promotion of terrorist activities in Kashmir.
“During the course of investigation, it surfaced that the said individual was attempting to alienate and sell the land, with the intention of using the sale proceeds to further support and finance terrorist activities. Accordingly, sanction under Section 25 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was obtained in case FIR No. 56/2019 of Police Station Chadoora, leading to the formal attachment of the said property,” police said.
Police said the individual is currently based in Pakistan, and continues to be involved in anti-national activities from across the border. (Agencies)
