JAMMU, Oct 8: A delegation led by Bharat Sharma, ZRUCC (Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee) Member, Northern Railway, and Sansad Pratinidhi, Udhampur Doda constituency represented by Union Minister, Dr. Jitendra Singh, submitted a memorandum to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Jammu, Vivek Kumar, demanding the upgradation of Chak Dayala Railway Station (CKDL) and the restoration of train stoppages that were discontinued during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The memorandum highlighted long-pending demands from the residents of Hiranagar, Dinga Amb, and Marheen tehsils of Kathua district, emphasizing the importance of the station for local commuters, traders and students.
The memorandum said Station of historical and economic importance established in 1971 under the NSG-6 (Non-Suburban Grade-6) category, Chak Dayala Railway Station once stood among the top revenue-generating stations in J&K. It earlier served as a halt for several major trains, including the Jammu Mail, Sealdah Express, Amritsar Express and Ahmedabad Express, Sharma told DRM.
It said strategically located just 50-60 meters from the National Highway, the Station serves a population of over 50,000 people across 35 Panchayats, surrounded by over 800 shops, 10 banks, and several educational institutions – making it a key hub for the region’s economic and social activity.
Despite the withdrawal of COVID-19 restrictions, residents said that train stoppages have not been restored, causing inconvenience to the public. Local representatives noted that this has affected students, daily commuters, and small business owners who depend on the railway for travel and trade.
The memorandum, endorsed by BDC members, Panchs, Sarpanchs, and local citizens, calls for upgradation of Chak Dayala Railway Station from NSG-6 to NSG-5 Category.
Immediate restoration of train stoppages for previously halting trains, improvement of passenger amenities, including waiting rooms, ticket counters, and sanitation facilities.
