ASI conducts underwater archaeological investigation at submerged temple

SRINAGAR, Oct 12: The Underwater Archaeology Wing of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recently conducted an underwater archaeological investigation at the ancient submerged temple site located in Manasbal Lake, District Ganderbal, Jammu & Kashmir.
The scientific exploration was undertaken using the latest underwater equipment and modern survey techniques to study the submerged architectural remains believed to be of historical and cultural significance. The investigation aimed to document and assess the extent, preservation, and nature of the remains lying beneath the clear waters of Manasbal Lake.
A team of trained underwater archaeologists headed by Prof Alok Tripathi, ADG and other tecnical experts Dr Aprajita Sharma, ASA; Dr Rajkumari Barbina, AA from ASI, New Delhi carried out the exploration using advanced diving gear, underwater cameras, sonar scanning, and other recording instruments. Preliminary observations indicate the presence of structural remnants that may belong to an ancient temple complex, shedding light on the historical and cultural developments of the region.
The scientific documentation and analysis of the findings are in progress. This initiative reflects ASI’s continued efforts toward exploring and conserving India’s rich underwater cultural heritage using cutting-edge technology and multidisciplinary expertise.
