LEH, Oct 16: The Leh Apex Body, under the leadership of Co-chairman Chering Dorjay Lakrook, today announced that silent and peaceful rallies will be held across the Union Territory of Ladakh on October 18 from 11 am to 1 pm In Leh, the rally will start from Singay Namgyal Chowk, pass through Leh Bazaar and culminate at the iconic Shanti Stupa.
Addressing a press conference, Lakrook said the rallies will be entirely silent and peaceful, without speeches, slogans, or placards. The purpose of these rallies, he said, is to register Ladakh’s protest against the recent killing of four people, injuries to many others, and the arrest and jailing of several Ladakhis. People participating in the rallies will wear black armbands as a mark of mourning and protest.

He added that similar rallies will be held across Kargil district as well, as Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have held several meetings in recent days to coordinate such peaceful demonstrations. As a mark of protest, people have also been urged to switch off their lights from 6 pm to 9 pm on that day to express their anger over the killings and continued harassment.

Dorjay further appealed to the people of Ladakh not to use musics or dances, traditional as well as modern, during marriages and other celebrations until the end of December this year, to show solidarity with the families who have lost their loved ones in the ongoing struggle for Ladakh’s demands and to mourn their losses.
President Ladakh Gonpa Association, Gyen Stanzin Dorjay; president Anjuman Imamia, Ashraf Ali Barcha; and president Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam, Dr. Abdul Qayum, were also present with the Apex Body Co-chairman during the press conference.
