Traders Federation seeks urgent relief for flood-hit Jammu

JAMMU, Oct 16: Traders Federation Ware House Nehru Market has appealed to the Government for immediate action and support for the people of Jammu still reeling from the devastation caused by the catastrophic rains and floods of August 26.
Addressing a press conference at the Federation office, president Deepak Gupta highlighted the immense loss suffered by Jammu, where thousands were rendered homeless, several lives were lost, and farmers’ livestock perished. While acknowledging the Government and locals’ efforts during the crisis, he criticized the administration for failing to implement adequate relief and rehabilitation measures in the aftermath.
Gupta expressed concern over the poor state of infrastructure, particularly the Bhagwati Nagar fourth bridge, which was washed away during the floods and remains unrepaired even after nearly two months. “Why is the work delayed? Who is responsible? Why is the Government not seeing Jammu’s plight?” he questioned, demanding an inquiry into the bridge collapse and the inaction on flood-damaged roads, including the Panjtirthi-Sidhra and Manda roads.
He also pointed out the disparity in administrative response, remarking that roads are swiftly repaired and beautified ahead of VVIP visits while the hardships of common citizens are overlooked. Appealing to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, he urged them to address the pressing infrastructural and humanitarian challenges faced by the people.
Besides seeking Government intervention, Gupta urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to support local markets during the festive season instead of opting for online shopping. “Buy Make-in-India products, support your neighborhood shops, and avoid foreign companies that take our money abroad,” he said.
The Federation also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce an urgent relief package for the flood-hit region. “Our farmers’ fields are destroyed, their livestock killed, and many homes along the Tawi River have collapsed. Thousands are struggling for basic necessities,” Gupta said.
Senior vice president Dheeraj Mahajan, vice president Vishal Gupta, general secretary Abhimanyu Gupta, secretary Rahul Gupta, and cashier Nitish Gupta were also present at the press conference.
