Srinagar, Oct 17: In a major boost to medical education in J&K, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 110 Post Graduate seats across various specialties in the Union Territory, with Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu receiving the highest number at 44 seats.

For the academic year 2025-26, GMC, Anantnag has been allocated 18 seats, including four in MD General Medicine, two in MS ENT, four in MD Anaesthesiology, four in MS General Surgery, and four in MD Paediatrics.
GMC, Baramulla has 10 seats, distributed as two in MS ENT, four in MS General Surgery, and four in MD Paediatrics.
GMC Jammu has 44 seats, including four in MD Radiotherapy/Radiation Oncology, two in MD Psychiatry, four in MD Biochemistry, four in MD Microbiology, four in MD/MS Anatomy, four in MD General Medicine, one in MD Immuno Haematology and Blood Transfusion, two in MS General Surgery, four in MD Pharmacology, one in MD Physiology, two in MD Pathology, four in MD Obstetrics and Gynaecology, four in MD Anaesthesiology, and four in MD Paediatrics.
GMC Kathua has 18 seats, including three in MS General Surgery, two in MD Biochemistry, three in MD Anaesthesiology, two in MS ENT, three in MD Pathology, three in MD General Medicine, two in MD Pharmacology, and two in MD Paediatrics.
GMC Rajouri has four seats, all in MD Paediatrics.
GMC Srinagar has 15 seats, including two in MD Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, four in MD Psychiatry, four in MD Radiotherapy/ Radiation Oncology, four in MD/MS Ophthalmology, and one in MD Respiratory Medicine.
Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar has seven seats, including four in MD Pathology and three in MD Social and Preventive Medicine/ Community Medicine.
In addition to Post Graduate seats increase, several other Medical Colleges in the region have also seen their MBBS intake rise this year.
According to official data, the NMC has raised seats at AIIMS Vijaypur from 62 to 100, Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences, Jammu from 100 to 150, GMC Baramulla from 100 to 150, GMC Jammu from 180 to 200, GMC Kathua from 100 to 150, and GMC Doda from 100 to 150.
No changes were made in the intake capacities of GMC Handwara (100 seats), GMC Rajouri (100 seats), GMC Udhampur (100 seats), SKIMS (150 seats), and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, which saw a separate 50-seat increase.
With the latest approvals, the total number of MBBS seats in Jammu and Kashmir has risen from 1,200 to over 1,500, marking an overall increase of more than 300 seats-a three-fold growth since 2018.
Notably, PG seat proposal for academic year 2025-26, Medical Colleges in J&K collectively requested 167 Post Graduate (MD/MS) seats from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for new and increased capacity.
Out of these 167 requested seats, 110 were approved for the year 2025-26, leaving 57 seat requests unapproved or deferred pending compliance checks.
