JAMMU, Oct 19: Col Prabhu Singh (Vir Chakra), a living Gallantry Awardee of the 1965 Indo-Pak War, was honoured by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha during the mega Ex-Servicemen Rally held recently to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the 1965 War.
During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, Col Prabhu Singh commanded a Rifle Company of the 18th Battalion, The Rajputana Rifles in the Khemkaran sector. On 6 September 1965, he was assigned the crucial task of capturing three enemy posts. Despite scanty intelligence and stiff enemy resistance, the mission was executed successfully under his determined leadership and tactical acumen.
On 9 September 1965, his company faced a massive counterattack by Patton tanks of Pakistan’s 1st Armoured Division, considered the pride of the Pakistani Army. His troops responded with outstanding courage, engaging the advancing armour with all available anti-tank weapons and destroying several enemy tanks. When the situation became critical and his position was overrun, Col Prabhu Singh displayed extraordinary resolve by ordering ‘DF SOS Red over Red’ artillery fire on his own location to halt the enemy’s advance.
Despite being outnumbered and under intense pressure, he and his men held their ground with exceptional bravery, ultimately repulsing the enemy’s heavy armoured assault. For his gallant leadership, courage, and devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds, Col Prabhu Singh was awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry honours.
A veteran of three major wars, Col Prabhu Singh also served with distinction in the Indo-China War of 1962 in NEFA (now Arunachal Pradesh) and again in the Indo-Pak War of 1971 in the Shakargarh sector, exemplifying the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
The recognition bestowed upon him during the rally served as a tribute to his lifetime of valour and a reminder of the enduring legacy of India’s war heroes.
