JAMMU, Oct 20: Devyani Rana, the BJP candidate from Nagrota and daughter of BJP stalwart late Devender Singh Rana and Harshdev Singh, former Education Minister and JKNPP-I nominee are foreign educated while Shamim Begum, a DDC member who joined fray as NC representative, is Post Graduate from Jammu University.

Devyani Rana, Harshdev Singh and Anil Sharma, a BJP rebel, who joined the fray as an Independent candidate from Nagrota, are all well off while Shamim Begum hasn’t shown any assets or land on her name and has only meagre cash in hand.
Significantly Harshdev’s wife Manju Singh has more moveable and immoveabkle assets than her husband.
Harshdev Singh is only among four main contenders, who has three criminal FIRs registered against him though he has described them as “politically motivated”.
Today was last date for filing nomination papers for by-elections to Nagrota Assembly constituency, which will go to polls on November 11. Counting of votes will take place on November 14.
Devyani Rana is youngest among four noted candidates at the age of just 30 and has done Graduation in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles in the United States, as per the affidavit filed by her at the time of filing of nomination paper.
Devyani had per annum income of Rs 5.22 lakh in 2020-21 which went up to Rs 33.26 lakh in 2023-24 but came down to Rs 29.54 lakh in 2024-25. She has only Rs 85,500 cash in hand but has Rs 88.89 lakh in J&K Bank account and Rs one lakh in HDFC Bank account Bahu Plaza. She has total moveable assets worth Rs 91.23 lakh.
She also has shares in Take One Television and Technologies Pvt Ltd and Jamkash Trucking Pvt Ltd. She has no land on her name whether agriculture or non-agriculture or any residential building. Also, she has no liabilities.
Harshdev Singh, the JKNPP-I candidate has three criminal cases registered against him including FIR No. 366/2018, FIR No. 121/2018 and FIR No. 34/2017, all registered at Udhampur. All three cases haven’t been challaned in the court.
Sixty-five years old Harshdev, who is Bachelor of Law from University of Jammu and has done advance course in International Humanitarian Law from Harvard University of United States, has, however, described the FIRs registered against him as politically motivated.
Harshdev has agriculture land to the tune of Rs 44 lakh on his name while her wife Manju Singh has agriculture land at three places amounting to Rs 98 lakh. Harshdev, three-time MLA from Ramnagar who lost 2014 elections from the same seat and 2024 in Chenani, has no liabilities but his spouse has liabilities worth Rs 20 lakh.
In fact, in both moveable and immovable assets, Harshdev’s wife is ahead of her husband.
Harshdev has shown moveable assets valued at Rs 11.71 lakh and immoveable assets at Rs 44 lakh as against similar assets of Rs 62.73 lakh and Rs 98 lakh in possession of his wife Manju Singh. However, Harshdev has filed Income Tax return for Rs 11.94 lakh in 2024-25 as against Rs 4430 by his spouse.
Shamim Begum, the National Conference candidate is 37 years of age and has done MA Urdu from the Jammu University. A DDC member at present, Shamim has no deposits in the bank and has shown only Rs 1.03 lakh cash in hand as against just Rs 10,000 cash with her husband Sardar Ali. She has shown Rs 1.80 lakh income while her husband, a Government employee earns a salary of Rs 7.68 lakh per annum.
Shamim has 27 tolas of gold with her with approximate value of Rs 35 lakh. She hasn’t shown any land with her-whether agriculture, non-agriculture, residential or commercial. Also, she has no liabilities.
Anil Sharma, 52, a former Sarpanch and BJP leader who joined the fray as an Independent candidate from Nagrota constituency today, though a Matriculate from Government High School Jandrah in 1989, has Rs 11.79 lakh worth shares in Samvardhan Motherson, a TATA Safari valued at Rs 10.5 lakh and 115 grams gold having market value of Rs 13.29 lakh while his wife Anjana Sharma has 310 grams gold to the tune of Rs 37.18 lakh.
Sharma has agriculture land at Jindrah with a value of Rs 9.5 lakh, one kanal land at Chinore and a plot at Sector-5 Upper Roop Nagar with total market value of Rs 59.36 lakh. He also owned shops at Roop Nagar and Tope Sherkhanian besides houses at Paloura and Tope Sherkhanian. A total value of these properties has been shown as Rs 3.21 crore.
Sharma’s moveable assets are valued at Rs 28.55 lakh and immoveable property at Rs 3.21 crore while his spouse’s moveable assets are worth Rs 38.22 lakh.
