NC’s Shamim, AAP’s Joginder, Sharma as Ind join fray in Nagrota

JAMMU, Oct 20: National Conference candidate and DDC Member,Dansal, Shamim Begum, Aam Aadmi Party’s, Joginder Thakur and former Sarpanch and president J&K Panchayat Conference, Anil Sharma filed their nomination papers from Nagrota Assembly segment for November 11 by-elections today.

While Shamim Begum and Joginder Thakur are the official candidates of JKNC and AAP, Anil Sharma filed his nomination papers as an Independent candidate in the office of Tehsildar Nagrota.

They were accompanied by their respective party leaders and supporters while filing the nomination papers.
With this, six candidates have filed their nomination papers for by-elections in Nagrota Assembly segment. Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate and daughter of former MLA and senior BJP leader, late Devender Singh Rana, Devyani Rana, JKNPP-I candidate, Harsh Dev Singh and Apni Party candidate, Bodh Raj Bhagat filed their nomination papers on October 18.
Among the six candidates who are contesting elections from Nagrota, five belong to political parties while Anil Sharma is lone Independent candidate.
The Congress, however, did not field its candidate from both 77-Nagrota and Budgam Assembly segments by-poll despite the fact that NC its alliance partner had offered Nagrota seat to the party.
The filing of nomination papers for by-elections of two Assembly segments in J&K i.e Nagrota in Jammu region and Budgam in Kashmir valley started soon after notification was issued by Election Commission of India (ECI) on October 13 in this regard.
Today was the last date of filing of nomination papers while the scrutiny of the papers will be done on October 22 and withdrawal of papers if any will be on October 24. The polling will be held on November 11 and counting of votes will be taken up on November 14.
The by-election to Nagrota Assembly segment was necessitated after its sitting MLA Devender Singh Rana died on October 31 last year only 24 days after he was elected to the Legislative Assembly.
Rana who had a very good public reputation in his constituency had won the seat by a huge margin of over 31,000 votes in last year’s Assembly poll.
The BJP had won the Nagrota Assembly seat in 2002, 2008 and 2024 elections. It lost the seat in 2014 elections to Devender Singh Rana who was NC candidate that time and later joined the BJP.
Before filing their nomination papers the NC, AAP and Independent candidates addressed the public meetings in the constituency.
Senior NC leader Shamim Dev’s nomination was filed in the presence of several senior party leaders and legislators, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, Cabinet Ministers, Javed Ahmad Rana and Satish Sharma, former Minister and additional general secretary, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, and provincial president, Jammu, Rattan Lal Gupta.
The party, in a handout said the event witnessed enthusiastic support from party workers and supporters, reflecting growing momentum and public confidence in Shamim Begum’s candidacy.
Leaders present expressed their faith in her commitment to public service and her vision for the development of Nagrota.
The leadership reiterated their unity and determination to strengthen democratic values and serve the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier Shamim Begum’s candidature was announced for the by-election to Nagrota Assembly segment by the party. She is presently DDC Member from Dansal area of Nagrota constituency.
Among those who were present on this occasion included Sheikh Bashir Ahmad, Pardeep Bali provincial secretaries Jammu, Vijay Lochan chairman SC Cell, Tejinder Pal Singh Aman, provincial president, YNC Jammu, Rakesh Singh Raka, vice president, Central Zone, D.S Chouhan president, Legal Cell, Chander Mohan Sharma district president, Jammu Urban, Raghbir Singh Manhas, district president Jammu Rural A, Ch. Rehmat Ali former BDC Chairman, Harsh Vardhan Singh president, NCSU, Dilshad Malik vice president, Central Zone, Thoru Ram Block president Nagrota, Siraj Din Block president, Dansal, Saif Ali Nambardar, Gurnam Singh Block president Jammu West, Zamir Quershi, Arunpal Singh, Vishal Thakur, Balwant Singh and others.
