Srinagar, Oct 20: National Conference (NC) Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, today said the upcoming Rajya Sabha election is set to be full of surprises.
Speaking to reporters here, he expressed confidence that his party will win all four Rajya Sabha seats as well as the two Assembly bypolls in Budgam and Nagrota.
“There will be a number of surprises, which you will see on October 24. We are sure of winning all four Rajya Sabha seats – you will see people voting for the NC whom you would never have imagined,” he said, while hinting at unexpected outcomes.
On the Nagrota bypoll, Sadiq said it is going to be a close contest, with the NC receiving support from the Congress.
“Shamima received a good number of votes last time, and we also have the support of the Congress this time,” he said.
He noted that there are some who were earlier with the BJP but are now disgruntled, “they, too, are supporting us. We hope she wins with a good majority.”
Expressing optimism, Sadiq added that the NC is hopeful of winning both the Assembly seats along with all four Rajya Sabha seats.
“Elections are always a contest – they’re not easy. What matters is campaigning. We have been given a mandate, and we have a lot to do and achieve. We are hopeful of winning the trust of the people in Budgam,” he said.
Dismissing rumours of any rift with the Congress, Sadiq said the alliance remains strong.
“There is no rift with the Congress. The party decided not to contest from Nagrota to prevent division of votes, as the NC had stood second there in 2024,” he clarified, adding that the NC aims to win all elections scheduled over the next month.
Responding to AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s remarks on the Public Safety Act (PSA), Sadiq said Owaisi should focus on Hyderabad instead of commenting on J&K.
“Where was he in 2019 when the people of J&K were being suppressed? He was then sitting with the BJP and didn’t say anything. Now, when it’s time to serve the people, he raises fingers. I appeal to him to focus on Hyderabad. We have got a mandate from the people, and we will do our job,” he added.
