JAMMU, Oct 23: The All Jammu Auto Operators Association convened an emergency meeting to express strong opposition to the recent order issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman, directing that E-Autos ply only within designated zones in Jammu.

The association stated that the order, issued by the Deputy Commissioner Jammu, who also serves as RTA Chairman, is “impractical and against the spirit” of facilitating E-Auto operations in the city.
Members recalled that during earlier meetings with Smart City officials, it was decided that conventional black autos would gradually be converted into E-Autos to help curb pollution. However, they alleged that the RTO Jammu, acting under directions of the then Transport Commissioner, registered hundreds of new E-Autos without consulting the association or adhering to the agreed conversion plan.
The association further claimed that despite their 2022 request to halt new registrations, the process continued unchecked. It has now demanded a high-level inquiry into how hundreds of E-Autos were registered when the “respective zone” provision was initially meant only for E-Rickshaws.
Urging the RTA Chairman to cancel the trial-based zonal operation order, the association also called for an immediate halt to further registration of E-Autos and E-Rickshaws, citing rising congestion on Jammu’s narrow roads and the city’s limited traffic capacity.
