KARGIL, Oct 24: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, today inaugurated the North Zone Women’s Kabaddi Championship at the University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus, organised in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Lt Governor emphasized the importance of promoting a sporting culture and enhancing women’s participation in sports, describing it as crucial for holistic student development. “Sports build confidence, leadership and teamwork while promoting physical and mental well-being. They help break gender stereotypes, foster social inclusion and prepare students for future challenges,” he said.
Commending the University for hosting a record-breaking participation of 48 universities from across India, he highlighted the institution’s efforts in advancing women’s leadership and participation in sports. He also praised the University’s academic achievements under Vice-Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha, including its second convocation with 612 degrees awarded, a four-fold increase in admissions, and research projects worth over Rs 50 crores.
The Lt Governor lauded the University’s School of Agricultural Science and Technology for innovations like buckwheat honey extraction and emphasized skill development through collaborations with TRI, MeitY, and NIELIT to prepare Ladakh’s youth for a digital and innovation-driven future.
During the event, Mohammad Jawed was felicitated for his selection as a coach for the National Volleyball Team. Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman/CEC LAHDC Kargil, called the championship a historic moment for the region and highlighted the need for a dedicated Agriculture University. MP Mohmad Hanifa Jan encouraged visiting athletes to act as ambassadors of Kargil’s culture and hospitality.
Prof. Saket Kushwaha welcomed all dignitaries and participants, calling the championship a milestone for women’s sports in Ladakh. The Lt Governor concluded by urging all teams to compete with passion, integrity, and sportsmanship, celebrating women’s strength and the spirit of youth.
