JAMMU, Oct 25: Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s emphatic win in the Rajya Sabha elections from Jammu & Kashmir, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Gupta asserted that the outcome reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expanding acceptance across the political spectrum while signalling a continued decline of the National Conference led by Omar Abdullah.
Gupta highlighted that despite having only 28 MLAs, the BJP secured 32 votes for its candidate and J&K BJP president Sat Sharma. He said four members of the opposition “chose development and nationalism over party diktats” by voting for the BJP, while three more opposition votes were “consciously rendered invalid,” which ultimately swung the contest in the party’s favour. Describing these as seven decisive votes, he stated that Modi’s vision is resonating even beyond the party’s ranks.
Targeting the NC, Gupta said that opposition legislators and citizens are increasingly “disillusioned” by NC’s politics of confusion and inconsistency. He accused Omar Abdullah of speaking of democracy while failing to ensure discipline within his own party. These votes of conscience and invalid ballots, he remarked, send a broader message that leaders and voters are turning away from the NC’s opportunistic and manipulative political approach.
Gupta also charged that the NC has eroded its credibility, distanced itself from its ally Congress, and undermined the idea of opposition unity in Jammu & Kashmir through persistent backdoor manoeuvring. Crediting the result to BJP’s leadership structure including National general secretary Tarun Chugh, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, general secretary (organization) Ashok Koul and chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi, he noted that their meticulous planning, communication strategy, and media outreach strengthened the party’s campaign and public perception.
Concluding, Gupta said the Rajya Sabha win goes beyond numbers, describing it as a strong political signal from J&K that the people trust Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and support the BJP’s roadmap for peace, progress, and prosperity in the region.
