JAMMU, Oct 29: Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, along with youth leader Narinder Sharma (Happy), visited Ward No. 54, Trikuta Nagar, to take stock of the civic issues troubling local residents, especially the broken Nallah crossings, choked canal, and damaged road stretches causing severe inconvenience to the public.
Residents complained that the crossing over Nallahs has become a danger zone, with broken slabs and potholes that cause daily traffic jams and pose safety risks, particularly to schoolchildren and elderly pedestrians. The nallah and canal remain choked with silt and debris, raising fears of flooding during heavy rainfall.
Expressing strong resentment over the poor condition of infrastructure, Tony said, It’s shocking that despite repeated requests, the authorities have failed to carry out even basic maintenance work. This kind of negligence is unacceptable. The administration must wake up before a tragedy occurs.” He further emphasized that immediate desilting of the canal and restoration of the crossing should be taken up on war footing.
“The government spends crores on Smart City projects, yet basic facilities like roads, drains, and crossings in residential areas remain neglected. This clearly shows misplaced priorities. People are suffering, and officials must be held accountable,” Tony asserted.
Tony also directed departmental officers to visit the spot immediately, inspect the damage, and ensure repair and blacktopping work starts without delay. He warned that any further delay would invite public protest and agitation, for which the administration alone would be responsible.
He added that civic issues should not be treated as political matters but as basic rights of citizens. “Development should not depend on political favouritism. Every area deserves proper infrastructure and safety,” he said.
Prominent residents including Ram Bhagat, Baldev Singh Puri (Retd CEO), Dharmeet Singh, Ajay Kumar, Vicky Sarmal, Parveen Sarmal, and Mukesh were present during the visit.
