KATHUA, Nov 12: Jammu and Kashmir Police today foiled a bovine smuggling attempt in the Lakhanpur area of Kathua district and rescued 17 animals that were being transported illegally in a truck.
Police said, around 2 PM, a team from Police Station Lakhanpur, led by the Station House Officer, was conducting routine patrolling and naka checking at Toll Plaza Lakhanpur on the National Highway when they intercepted a truck coming from Punjab towards Srinagar.
During checking, they said, 17 bovines, including six oxen and eleven cows, were found loaded in a cramped and cruel manner.
The animals were rescued on the spot, and the vehicle was seized, police said.
According to them, a case FIR number 139/2025 under sections 223 of BNS and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has been registered at Police Station Lakhanpur in connection with the incident and further investigation has been set into motion.
