Leh, Nov 13: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, today inspected the under-construction international-standard indoor ice hockey rink at NDS Stadium, Leh, calling it a significant step toward making Ladakh India’s winter sports capital.
Gupta lauded Ladakh’s emergence as a hub for ice hockey, noting that players from the region form a substantial part of India’s men’s and women’s national teams. He highlighted the Rs 51-crore project, which will feature a fully automated chilling plant modern spectator facilities, and provisions for year-round training and competition, enabling athletes to practice even during off-season months.
Reiterating the UT Administration’s commitment to nurturing local talent, he expressed confidence that Ladakh will host the third edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, with a formal proposal already submitted to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Gupta directed officials to expedite construction and prioritize the chilling system installation to ensure the venue is ready for national-level tournaments. “This facility represents Ladakh’s ambition to lead India’s winter sports movement,” he said. The inspection was attended by officials from Youth Services & Sports, the Public Works Department, and the Ice Hockey Federation of India.
