CHUSHUL, Nov 18: Fire & Fury Corps observed the 63rd Rezang La Day today, offering a solemn tribute to the unparalleled courage and supreme sacrifice of the soldiers of 13 KUMAON who fought valiantly in the 1962 Indo-China War.
A wreath-laying ceremony at the Rezang La Memorial, led by the GOC 3 Infantry Division, honoured the legendary Major Shaitan Singh, PVC, and the 113 martyrs of 13 KUMAON who stood their ground against overwhelming odds.
Among the attendees were elderly villagers, who are now in their 80s and 90s, who had assisted the Indian Army during the 1962 war. They were felicitated with mementos by the Army at the Rezang La War Memorial, acknowledging their courage, contribution, and solidarity during those difficult days.

Recounting the war, 84-year-old Tsering Sangdup, from Tsaga village, shared how locals helped carry ammunition to Rezang La on the backs of yaks from the rear side. He recalled that when the brave soldiers were martyred, it was again the villagers who brought their remains down almost to what is now the war memorial site, using the same hardy mountain animals. His memories offered a poignant glimpse into the shared resolve and sacrifice of soldiers and civilians.
Tsering Tundup, 82, also from Tsaga village, recalled how helicopters, Shaktiman trucks, tanks, and other machinery were airlifted to the Chushul airfield by large four-engine aircraft. He said that during the war, villagers of Tsaga and Chushul had to flee to safer locations as tensions escalated.
The Battle of Rezang La stands as an iconic chapter in India’s military history, symbolising unyielding resolve, raw courage, and a fight against impossible odds. This year’s commemoration, spanning 14 to 18 November, aimed to rekindle the spirit of patriotism and pass on the heroic legacy of the Rezang La warriors to younger generations.
A series of activities were organised including painting and essay competitions for schoolchildren, encouraging them to reflect on the Indian Army’s valour and the region’s rich cultural heritage. To strengthen bonds with border communities, events were also held in Chushul and Tsaga villages.
