Srinagar, Nov 18: An 18-year-old girl battling a rare spinal cord tumour has been given a second chance at life after a team of surgeons at SKIMS, Soura, successfully removed the growth in a gruelling 11-hour operation.
According to doctors, the procedure involved a 17-level laminoplasty followed by the delicate removal of a tumour from within the spinal cord
They described it as a “technically demanding” operation rarely attempted even in leading neurosurgical centres.
The surgery was led by Dr Abrar Ahad Wani, Professor and Head of Unit, Department of Neurosurgery, along with his surgical team.
The anaesthesia team, headed by Dr Zulfikar Ali, provided continuous high-risk neuro-anaesthesia support throughout the 11-hour procedure, ensuring complete physiological stability of the patient.
Doctors said the achievement marks a remarkable medical milestone in the region. “The entire surgery was performed free of cost,” they added.
Post-surgery, the girl is recovering well and showing encouraging signs of neurological improvement.
The feat is being hailed as one of J&K’s most complex spinal surgeries to date.
A family member expressed gratitude, saying their financial condition had made it impossible to seek treatment outside J&K.
“SKIMS did everything for our daughter free of cost. She was in unbearable pain and losing strength day by day. Today, she has hope again. We are deeply thankful to the entire SKIMS team for saving our child’s life,” they said.
Director SKIMS, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, lauded the medical teams for their exceptional achievement.
