JAMMU, Nov 26: Noted educationist and philanthropist Ishwar Dass Soni passed away after a brief illness here today. He was 97.
The former Deputy Director of School Education Department and a recipient of Jammu and Kashmir Government’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Soni was recently discharged from a hospital where he was undergoing treatment for chest infection. He passed away at his residence at Janipur area.
Born on April 18, 1928 in Bhaddu Village of Billawar Tehsil in Kathua district, ID Soni joined as a teacher in School Education Department in 1948.
After his retirement as Deputy Director, School Education Department, in the year 1983, he was made Project Director for Evaluation of education in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir by then Government in the Centre.
Soni joined Bharat Scouts & Guides as its Commissioner in 1985 and served this organisation for 35 years up to 2020.
Later, he served different organisations in different capacities. He was conferred with the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s Lifetime Achievement Award on the Republic Day this year.
Soni was also the recipients of several other awards and author of different books.
He is survived by sons Vinod Soni, Sanjay Soni, daughters-in-law Alka Soni, Anupama Soni, daughters Vijay Lakshmi, Kuldip Anand, Neelam Kapahi, Anu Radha Nargotra and sons-in-law Chaman Lal Gandotra, SC Kapahi, and Dr Narinder Nargotra and grandchildren Deepankar, Eva, Danish, Ansh, Aakanksha, and Shubam Gupta.
