NC leader criticizes BJP MLAs for laxity in anti-drug mission

JAMMU, Dec 1: Senior National Conference leader Rajesh Gupta expressed serious concern over the escalating drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir, criticizing the 29 BJP MLAs for their lack of oversight in the ongoing Nasha Mukt campaign. Gupta said he was “feeling very distressed” over the situation, pointing out that elected representatives have neither taken initiatives nor questioned authorities about the slow and ineffective implementation of the drug-free programme.
According to Gupta, nearly two years after the Government issued a detailed SOP for declaring Panchayats and Urban Local Body wards as Nasha Mukt, progress remains dismal. Out of over 4,000 Panchayats, only around 1,000 have been certified Nasha Mukt and not a single urban ward has met the criteria.
He said the SOP mandates regular awareness programmes, Gram Sabha meetings, coordinated action by district and tehsil committees and strict steps against drug hotspots, yet most of these activities are conducted sporadically. Gupta warned that the lack of MLA monitoring has allowed the drug problem to deepen in rural and urban areas.
He urged the Government to review the SOP’s implementation and called on legislators to fulfil their responsibilities, ensuring timely action to protect the youth and curb the growing menace of drugs in the Union Territory.
