Srinagar, Dec 2: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today accused the NC-led Government of “hiding behind the Lieutenant Governor” on issues of governance while exercising full authority on matters it prefers to handle.
Speaking to reporters, PDP spokesperson Iqbal Tramboo said the NC-led Government was selectively invoking lack of powers to avoid responsibilities.
“The NC-led Government is doing a number of works such as transfers, funds to MLAs, salaries. What they want to do, they are doing it; what they do not want to do, there they say they do not have powers,” he said.
He added that it was “not correct” for the Government to claim powerlessness, pointing out that statehood had been raised in the Rajya Sabha by the NC’s newly elected MPs.
“Because wherever they want, they work, and where they do not want to, they hide behind the LG and say that they do not have powers. If they do not have powers, we have not seen them pressing for it by protesting on it,” Tramboo said.
On the reservation issue, he said the party had consistently flagged injustices and demanded rationalization. “We have been demanding rationalization so that those deserving get what is their right,” he said.
Regarding the upcoming cabinet meeting, which is likely to settle the reservation issue, he said that it should be addressed at the earliest. “We are hoping for a solution; we do not want any quotas to be decreased; the rightful right should be given.”
Commenting on the Rubaiya Sayeed kidnapping case, Tramboo said, “The case is old, and I don’t say there should be no action; justice must be delivered.”
However, he said the Centre was showing greater focus on such cases while “in comparison, they do not show enthusiasm in addressing the issues of the people which they are facing.”
He said agencies must clarify their position, stressing: “You do not find absconders from home and these agencies need to clear their stand.”
The PDP spokesperson said the Centre must honour the trust people expressed during the elections. “People want to come towards the mainstream. The Centre’s policies are not responsive,” he added.
Referring to a meeting chaired by party president Mehbooba Mufti, Tramboo said it focused on Srinagar and the issues faced by its residents.
“The city’s resources have been adversely affected and its economy—dependent on trade, tourism and employment—was under strain,” he said.
