SMVD Medical College row

JAMMU, Dec 3: Senior Congress leader and DDC Member from Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony today launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing the party of politicising the SMVD Medical College admissions issue and deliberately trying to communalise it.
Tony said the controversy was entirely of BJP’s own making. “If the BJP had genuinely wanted minority status or reserved seats for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), they should have applied for it when the institution was established. Instead, they failed to do so and are now running to their own Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, in an attempt to eyeswash the public and create communal tension,” he said.
Tony further criticised BJP leaders for trying to turn a merit-based institution into a Hindu-Muslim debate, adding, “The college is funded by a Hindu shrine and should have been handled with transparency. But the BJP has a habit of making every issue about Hindu vs Muslim politics. Their failure to act responsibly from the beginning is now being hidden behind communal theatrics.”
Congress leader also addressed the party’s push for a “Gurukul” at the college grounds, saying, “No one stopped them from establishing a Gurukul or applying for minority status. If they truly cared, they could have managed the college accordingly, but instead they chose politics over responsibility.”
He reiterated that admissions at SMVD Medical College are strictly merit-based under NEET rules and accused the BJP of misleading the public. “This is not about Hindu or Muslim students. Merit alone determines admissions, ensuring fair opportunity for all deserving students. BJP is politicising an administrative lapse to cover up its own failures,” Tony said.
Tony warned that such tactics were dangerous for social harmony, stating, “Turning educational institutions into battlegrounds for communal politics is unacceptable. The people of Jammu & Kashmir will not accept communalisation of institutions built on faith, merit, and public trust.”
He demanded immediate focus on transparency, meritocracy, and accountability in all educational institutions.
