JAMMU, Dec 3: Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, today termed the Village Defence Guards (VDGs) as the “first tier of security” in safeguarding the border areas, while urging the latter to remain alert, disciplined and fully aligned with the security grid to foil the evil designs of the enemy.
The DGP made these remarks during an interaction with VDG members of R S Pura and Arnia sectors, followed by a detailed security review at the Border Police Post Chakrohi and Police Station R S Pura.

A statement said that 110 VDG members attended the interaction, where senior officers from J&K Police and BSF heard their concerns and assured timely redressal.
During the meetings, the DGP underlined that the security landscape along the border continues to evolve with threats such as drone droppings, tunnelling attempts and riverine infiltration methods being frequently used by the adversary.
He said these challenges require strong ground coordination and active support from border residents who have historically helped the forces in containing terrorism.
The DGP informed the gathering that Standard Operating Procedures for VDG functioning and border management have been formally notified in close coordination with BSF and J&K Police.
He said these SOPs clearly define the duties, responsibilities and response mechanisms for all stakeholders.
He emphasised strict compliance to the SOPs, stating that their correct implementation will significantly strengthen the border security grid and help thwart hostile designs.
Calling VDGs the “first tier of the security structure,” the DGP appreciated their role in timely intelligence sharing and recalled their contribution during major operations and natural calamities.
He said the cooperation of border villagers has always improved the effectiveness of anti-terrorist efforts, and achieving results without their involvement is impossible.
He urged VDG members to remain vigilant, adopt preventive strategies, participate actively in training activities and ensure proper maintenance and safe handling of government-issued weapons.
The DGP clarified that VDG service is voluntary and not a guaranteed route to Government employment.
However, he added that the police are fully committed to recognising outstanding work.
Exceptional acts of bravery, gallantry or contribution in counter-terrorism can pave the way for induction into the police force through the Police Establishment Board.
He assured that VDG members showing exemplary courage will be suitably rewarded. Later, during his visit to BPP Chakrohi and Police Station R S Pura, the DGP reviewed the functioning of units, inspected records, and took stock of manpower needs.
He directed officers to conduct regular inspections, maintain updated registers, ensure cleanliness of premises and improve overall efficiency.
He again emphasised the ground-level implementation of VDG and Border SOPs and instructed that the Annual Range Classification of all personnel, including SPOs, be completed within December.
The DGP praised the commitment of police personnel and encouraged them to continue working diligently to uphold peace, law and order in the region.
