DHAKA, Dec 14: Amplifying his anti-India rhetoric, student leader and NCP chief Nahid Islam alleged that New Delhi was masterminding a conspiracy to undermine socio-political stability in Bangladesh, ever since the ouster of the Awami League regime led by Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
Making his remarks in a joint party meeting at the Chief Advisor’ residence after the shooting of Inqilab Moncha leader Sharif Osman Haidi, the NCP leader claimed that certain as-of-yet-unknown groups have been actively carrying out various activities in order to undermine the July Uprising, who were “either or jointly linked to the leadership of the ousted Awami League, and the Indian government”.
“There is an organised campaign against July. This is happening across different layers of the media and administration. Those who come to power after the election will also be victims of this. No one will be able to run the government alone,” he said.
He further alleged that an active media campaign was being carried out by political opponents who were weaving narratives across print, digital, and social media, repainting the mass uprising in 2024 as a crime, even as simultaneous efforts were underway to normalise the Awami League and Jatiya Party.
“They regularly participate in TV talk shows, hold meetings at various administrative levels, gather at universities, and chant slogans at court premises.
“We do not need any special security, nor will we take it. July must be collectively owned by everyone. In the struggle over who says what about July, we are destroying July itself,” he commented.
Claiming that the so-called “conspirators” view their “lack of unity as defeat,” he added “They are doing whatever they want while sitting in India, and we are unable to do anything.”
Further spewing vitriol against India, the NCP leader remarked “This is a deliberate act of terrorism. The Indian government must be held accountable through its embassy in Bangladesh.
“By sheltering a death-sentenced genocide convict, they have committed a moral wrongdoing and are now supporting the Awami League in destabilising Bangladesh,” he claimed.
Urging strict action against all those who were “masquerading” as either academics, activists, or influencers for advancing the Awami League’s agenda, he claimed that unless the party’s “fascist activities” are not resisted on a collective level across Bangladesh’s social and political spheres, no political leader was safe, insinuating towards another covert political sabotage conspiracy.
Another NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah said no security measure would be enough if parties did not remain united. “Parties are creating various opportunities for the Awami League for political interest,” noting that dissent among all the other groups had only led to the erstwhile ruling party to have become more popular.
The Awami League’s growing popularity is ironically more largely attributed to the interim govt’s unpopularity among the general public due to its failures in curtailing socio-political unrest, or mitigating the nation’s economic collapse, while none of the parties except the BNP are viewed as being a viable political alternative, given that the Jamaat and the NCP are largely unpopular among the masses owing to their political agendas.
Nahid Islam was a central student coordinator of the July Uprising, that led to the toppling of the Hasina government. Before forming the NCP in February 2025, he served as an Adviser in the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, holding portfolios for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, as well as Information and Broadcasting.
