SRINAGAR, Dec 17: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of deliberately targeting PDP president Mehbooba Mufti while remaining conspicuously silent on the role of his “NDA allies” in what it termed a “shameful assault on Muslim dignity” over the hijab issue.
The PDP spokesperson Syed Tajmul said Omar’s criticism of Mehbooba Mufti was”politically motivated, hypocritical and aimed at pleasing New Delhi,”rather than standing up for the constitutional and religious rights of Muslim women.
“Instead of showing the courage to directly question the BJP and its allies responsible for repeated humiliations of Muslims, Omar Abdullah has chosen the easier path of attacking Mehbooba Mufti, who has consistently raised her voice against injustice,” he said.
He accused the National Conference (NC) leadership of practicing”selective outrage,” alleging that Omar Abdullah was quick to score political points against the PDP but lacked the moral courage to confront the NDA leadership over incidents involving the hijab.
“This duplicity exposes the NC’s double standards. On one hand, they pretend to be defenders of Muslim interests in Kashmir, and on the other, they shield the very forces that are trampling upon those rights across the country,”the PDP spokesperson said.
He further said that Mufti has always taken a principled stand on issues of identity, dignity and constitutional rights, even when it came at a political cost. “Targeting her to whitewash the failures and compromises of the NC will not fool the people of Jammu and Kashmir,”he added.
The PDP warned that such “opportunistic politics”by the National Conference would only deepen public mistrust and further erode its credibility.
“People can clearly see who is standing with them and who is trying to appease power corridors by sacrificing principles,” the statement said.
The party reiterated that it would continue to raise its voice against any attempt to undermine religious freedom and constitutional values, irrespective of political pressure or consequences.
