The protest, led by Srinagar District Youth Congress president Yasir Mandoo, was held at the party headquarters, where scores of Congress workers assembled and attempted to take out a protest rally.
However, the demonstration was foiled after police sealed the entrance of the premises, preventing the protesters from moving out.
Addressing reporters, Mandoo alleged that the Bihar Chief Minister had recently “disrespected” a woman doctor and “forcibly removed” her hijab.
He termed the incident an attack on constitutional freedoms and basic rights.
“This is not just an attack on the hijab; it is an attack on the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the freedom to wear what they choose and to practice and preach their faith,” Mandoo said.
He accused the BJP and its allies of indulging in hate and divisive politics, and said they were not adhering to constitutional guarantees.
He added that the Congress stood with the aggrieved woman and the youth of the country, and demanded Nitish Kumar’s resignation along with an apology to the woman and the Muslim community.
During the protest, workers raised slogans such as “Nitish Kumar maafi mango,” “Nitish Kumar yeh gunda gardi nahi chalegi,” and “Hijab hamari shaan hai.”
As part of the demonstration, Youth Congress workers also burned an effigy of Nitish Kumar to register their protest.
The protesters were seen holding placards reading “Hijab is our secular right”.
Youth Congress leaders Basharat Wani, Waseem, Mohd Shafi, Saqib Sultan, Zahid Mir, Syed Iqbal, and Musadiq Mehraj were also present during the protest.
