JAMMU, Dec 24: A documentary on the life and legacy of veteran Gujjar leader, renowned educationist and former Minister, Abdul Ghani Kohli was released today amid warm applause and appreciation from Civil Society at K L Seigal Halal here.
The documentary was released by BJP, general secretary, Ashok Koul who was the chief guest on the occasion. In his address Ashok Koul described Abdul Ghani Kohli a prominent educationist and political leader who rendered exemplary service in the fields of social welfare and public life. Speaking on the occasion Abdul Ghani Kohli recalled his early struggle in village life and thanked the Almighty for granting him the opportunity to serve the people of his constituency and Jammu and Kashmir.
Prof Lalit Mangotra head of Dogri Sanstha highlighted the role of Kohli in establishing educational facilities for the needy and promoting fair and people centric politics in the Pir Panjal region.
The documentary highlights the contribution of Kohli who carries a long and distinguished political and social legacy within the Gujjar community.
As per documentary the struggle in the family dates back to 1931 when the Gujjar Jat Conference was founded by the uncle of Abdul Ghani Kohli Late Ch Ghulam Hussain Lissanvi popularly known as “Gujjar Gandhi’’ in Poonch. The historic organisation became the first political platform to fight for the rights of the deprived Gujjars and Bakerwal communities in Jammu and Kashmir. After 1947 the families of Hazrat Baba Sahib Larvi of Kangan Kashmir and Ch Ghulam Hussian Lissanvi the Gujjar Gandhi of Lassana, Surankote in Poonch were among the pioneers who stood up for the rights of Gujjar and Bakerwal communities. These families form the ancestral background of Kohli family,.
An engineering graduate from REC Srinagar, Kohli was born in Lassana, Poonch in 1943 in the family of Late Ch Feroz-ud-Din Kohli.
After retirement from Government service Kohli devoted to education and established several institutions for the benefit of needy and underprivileged sections of society.
In 2014 Kohli joined BJP and won the Assembly election from Kalakote with a history margin and served as a Cabinet Minister in BJP Government. During his tenure as Minister he transformed Kalakote as a hub of development.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Prof Shalni Rana prolific English author and writer. The vote of thanks was proposed by Wasim Kohli, Managing Director B N College of Education.
