*Sub-zero nights, warmer days continue in Valley

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, Dec 25: The night temperatures across Kashmir plunged to sub-zero levels while the maximum temperatures recorded today remained several degrees above normal across the region. Even as weather conditions in Jammu remained clear throughout the day, flight operations at Jammu Airport were affected, with several flights delayed and one cancelled due to foggy condition in Delhi and other States.

Several parts of Kashmir experienced freezing night temperatures, with Sonamarg emerging as the coldest place in the Valley at minus 7.3 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a minimum of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam registered minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. Shopian and Pulwama recorded minimum temperatures of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius and minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius and other places in the Valley also witnessed below-freezing conditions, with Anantnag at minus 2.7 degrees Celsius, Pampore at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, Budgam at minus 2.3 degrees Celsius, Kupwara at minus 2.0 degrees Celsius and Qazigund at minus 1.8 degrees Celsius. Awantipora recorded minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Ganderbal at minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, Bandipora at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, Baramulla at minus 0.9 degrees Celsius, Kokernag at minus 0.7 degrees Celsius and Kulgam at minus 0.5 degrees Celsius.
However, the day temperatures recorded today across Kashmir stayed several notches above normal. Srinagar recorded a maximum of 13.0 degrees Celsius, which is 4.0 degrees Celsius above normal. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 12.6 degrees Celsius, 3.7 degrees Celsius above normal, while Pahalgam recorded 9.0 degrees Celsius, 2.1 degrees Celsius above normal. Kupwara registered a maximum of 13.3 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees Celsius above normal, Kokernag recorded 10.6 degrees Celsius, 3.3 degrees Celsius above normal, and Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 4.0 degrees Celsius, marginally 0.6 degrees Celsius above normal.
Meanwhile, despite clear local weather, Jammu Airport witnessed disruptions in flight operations due to dense fog in Delhi and other states. Of the 28 scheduled flights (arrival and departure combined), one flight — IGO 2293/2527 (DEL–IXJ–DEL) — was cancelled, while four flights were delayed. These included IGO 5207/6510 (DEL–IXJ–DEL), IGO 6762/6762 (DEL–IXJ–SXR), SEJ 160/160 (DEL–IXJ–SXR) and IGO 559/559 (BOM–IXJ–SXR). No flights were diverted.
Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 8.1 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 20.8 degrees Celsius. Katra recorded a minimum of 8.4 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 20.0 degrees Celsius. Banihal registered a minimum of 4.8 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 17.4 degrees Celsius, while Batote recorded a low of 4.7 degrees Celsius and a high of 18.1 degrees Celsius. Bhadarwah experienced colder night conditions with a minimum of 0.3 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 17.5 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has forecast partly cloudy weather till December 29. “On December 30, there will be generally cloudy weather with light snow at isolated higher reaches,” the weatherman said. He added that between December 31 and January 1, 2026, weather will remain generally cloudy with the possibility of light rain in plains and light snow at scattered places, followed by partly cloudy conditions from January 2 to January 6.
