JAMMU, Dec 28: Department of Pediatric Surgery at AIIMS Jammu has achieved a major milestone by successfully performing over 250 pediatric surgeries in just over a year, marking a significant advancement in specialized child healthcare for Jammu and Kashmir.
Adding to this accomplishment, the Department has established a state-of-the-art Pediatric Urodynamic Study (UDS) Laboratory-the first of its kind in J&K. The advanced facility strengthens AIIMS Jammu’s capacity for precise diagnosis and management of complex urinary disorders in children, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the region.
These developments have been made possible under the visionary leadership of Executive Director and CEO, Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, whose commitment to bringing tertiary-level healthcare to Jammu has transformed access to high-end medical services for local families.
Headed by Dr Vijay Kumar Kundal, Additional Professor and Head of the Department, the Pediatric Surgery unit has demonstrated expertise across a wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from congenital anomalies to critical neonatal surgeries. The team includes Assistant Professor Dr Lucky Gupta, the first batch of MCh Pediatric Surgery residents-Dr Shaik Rizwan Ahmed, Dr Vikas and Dr Manish Tiwari.
The Department has successfully carried out complex procedures such as bladder exstrophy repairs, ureteric reimplantations, ventriculoperitoneal shunt placements, pyeloplasties, and major gastrointestinal surgeries, alongside routine pediatric operations like hypospadias correction, hernia repairs, and orchidopexies.
The newly established Urodynamics Lab plays a crucial role in diagnosing bladder dysfunctions, including neurogenic bladder, enabling early and evidence-based interventions to protect long-term kidney health. More than 2,800 children have benefited from outpatient consultations and follow-up care.
Further strengthening comprehensive pediatric services, the Department became the first superspeciality unit at AIIMS Jammu to start a 10-bedded independent ward in June 2025.
Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta stated that the Pediatric Surgery Department reflects AIIMS Jammu’s vision of “excellence with empathy,” delivering advanced care closer to home for children across the region.
