WASHINGTON, Jan 3: Several US lawmakers, both Democrats and the Republicans, on Saturday opposed President Donald Trump’s military attack on Venezuela, calling it “illegal” and a blatant violation of the federal constitution, which did not allow the president to wage a full-scale military assault on another nation by his lonesome approval, as it had no prior approval by the Congress.
Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Tim Kaine said the strikes violated the US Constitution because they were carried out without legislative authorisation.
Senator Brian Schatz, condemning the operation remarked that there was no particular reason for the US to step into a war with Venezuela, and neither did Trump bother informing the Congress or the public about this operation before approving it.
“We have no vital national interests in Venezuela that justify a war,” he said, adding “we should have learned by now not to get involved in another stupid adventure. And he does not even bother to tell the American public what the hell is going on.”
In the House of Representatives, Jim McGovern accused Trump of bypassing Congress and public opinion.
“Without congressional authorisation and with the vast majority of Americans opposed to military action, Trump has just launched an illegal and unjustified attack against Venezuela,” he said, reports Presna Latina.
“He says we don’t have enough money for healthcare for Americans, but somehow we have unlimited funds for war.”
Representative Melanie Stansbury echoed that view in a post on X, writing: “Let’s be clear: these attacks are illegal.
The president has no authority to declare war or undertake large-scale military operations without Congress.” She urged lawmakers to intervene, saying, “Congress must act to stop him. Immediately.”
California Congressman Raul Ruiz, warned that this illegitimate action was needlessly putting the lives of US troops at risk.
“Trump’s war against Venezuela is illegal and endangers American military personnel,” he wrote on X, stressing that “the Constitution requires congressional approval for any military action, and Trump neither sought nor has it.”
