BEIJING, Jan 5: Referring to recent developments in Venezuela, where the United States captured President Nicol?s Maduro and his wife under Operation “Absolute Resolve”, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing cannot accept any country acting to be an international “judge” or playing the role of international “policeman”.
“We have never believed that any country can act as the world’s police, nor do we accept that any nation can claim to be the world’s judge,” Wang told his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, during a meeting in Beijing on Sunday
Wang admitted that the global landscape has become “increasingly volatile”, marked by growing unilateralism, and said that the type of “bullying behaviour” recently witnessed is “unacceptable”.
“The sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected under international law,” China’s top diplomat added, in his first public remarks after images of the 63-year-old Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed emerged on social media, sparking mixed reactions from countries.
Wang reiterated China’s long-standing position against the use of force in international affairs.
“We consistently oppose the threat or use of force in international relations and the imposition of one country’s will on another,” he said while opposing the use of the threat of force in international relations and rejecting attempts to impose one country’s will on others.
On January 3, the United States launched a large-scale military operation in Venezuela, capturing President Nicol?s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and transporting them to New York. US President Donald Trump later announced that Maduro and Flores would face trial on charges of alleged “narco-terrorism” and posing security threats, including to the United States.
However, Beijing condemned the US military actions and urged the United States to immediately release Maduro and halt efforts to undermine Venezuela’s government.
US President Donald Trump said that he maintained a “very good” relationship with his counterpart Xi Jinping and pledged that Venezuelan oil shipments to China would continue.
Trump said he believes that his military operation in Venezuela will not affect relations with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
“I don’t think so. I have a very good relationship. We have the power of tariffs, and he has other powers on us,” Trump told reporters when asked whether the capture of Venezuelan President Nicol?s Maduro by US forces would affect his relationship with Xi Jinping. (UNI)
