JAMMU, Jan 22: The Court of Principal Sessions Judge Jammu has framed charges against five individuals involved in a high-profile robbery at Anand Jewelers, Greater Kailash and the subsequent cover-up murder of an associate.
The Principal Sessions Judge R N Watal, in the order, declared that there is sufficient material on file at this stage to charge the accused for a series of grave offenses. The court’s decision effectively moves the case from the investigative phase to a formal trial.
The accused Rahul Sharma, son of Shashi Pal Sharma of Lower Kanal Bishnah, Tushar Kumar, son of Sewa Ram of Bishnah, Sunil Sharma, son of Romesh Chander of Bhalwal and Aniket Mottan, son of Ashok Kumar of Miran Sahib have been charged under Sections 61/310/311/111/ 238/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 4/25 of the Arms Act.
The accused Vardhan Sharma has been charged under Sections 61/310/311/ 238/3(5) BNS and 4/25 Arms Act. Notably, the court observed that Section 111 of the BNS (organized crime) did not appear to be prima facie established against him at this stage.
Upon the framing of the charges, the contents were read over and explained to the accused. While Vardhan Sharma was physically present, the other four accused attended the proceedings virtually. All five individuals pleaded not guilty and claimed their right to be tried.
The court has directed the Incharge of the District Jail to obtain the signatures of the accused on the formal charge forms.
The case stems from a daring daylight robbery on February 1, 2025, where masked men entered Anand Jewelers in Greater Kailash, held the proprietor at knifepoint and fled with gold ornaments valued at nearly Rs 98.5 lakh.
The investigation further revealed a darker secondary plot—-the alleged murder of Harsh Dev, a former associate who reportedly demanded a share of the loot and threatened to expose the gang.
According to the prosecution, the mastermind, Rahul Sharma, lured Dev to a “birthday party” where he was murdered and his body buried in a remote area near Surinsar.
It is pertinent to mention here that due to the sensitive nature of the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the then SDPO City South Gandhi Nagar DySP Sunil Jasrotia was constituted by the DPO Jammu and the final investigation results which included disclosure memos, recovery of stolen articles, CCTV footage and CDR analysis were produced under the leadership of this team.
